Where to put the party?

Wednesday, March 3rd, 2010

Yesterday I discussed how the personal awareness of the advent of natural spring activity was the real beginning of the year. However, with such variety across the hemispheres (and inversion between them) we are left with the dilemma of where to put the party?

Yes, we should all use the same calendar: it is practical. Although, as we don’t all share a fuss as July becomes August we can similarly carry on as normal between December and January (perhaps just having a little fun at everyones new desk calendar).

I propose the Spring equinox: When night relinquishes it’s dominance on our 24-hour cycle. Be pagan about it if you want to, or are wont to do already (apologies, but your celebrations are wonderfully convenient for hi-jacking), but the physics of this astronomical event should provide a satisfactory scientific basis for the rest of the world to accept this choosing. Each Hemisphere will have its own. The date is sufficiently advanced that most of the lands will have experienced the beginnings of spring activity, so their populace will really feel the new beginning. There’s also a high likelihood of being able to fire-up an early BBQ, which instantly makes every party better!

I’d like you to consider the difference this would have on your goals (resolutions, if you must):

  • Imagine taking that run in the warming, bright day.
  • Imagine binning those cigarettes while breathing the fresh spring air.
  • Imagine buying more fruit & veg. when the plants are all lush and vibrant.

It is an invigorating and encouraging atmosphere in which to start new beginnings. Were you unsuccessful in January? I challenge you to try again today, or (this year) on the 20th March, at 17:32 UTC.

If, like myself, you have made a good head start on the year, why not evaluate your progress, re-evaluate your goals, and really focus on making the next 6 months count!

March 2nd: My “new year” appears.

Just a quick post that requires no research or linking, just the thoughts to be released.

“Spring has sprung,

The grass has ris’,

I wonder where them birdies is?”

Yes, our typical New Year celebrations are rather empty for me. A new calendar: that is all. My problem is that it doesn’t accurately signify anything. The shortest day has passed and we’ve just marked our darkest hour with celebrations tied to religious festivities at Christmas. We claim only a week later that the New Year is beginning, but in fact winter has barely started. I feel that is why people quickly get deflated after a few days. There is no real significance for us to latch on to. We want to be different and new, but around us the cold endures and the lightening days are still without power.

For me, spring is the real signal of New Year. There is new life, there is change; the whole natural world kicks into gear. This happens at a different time throughout the world (and within countries). I first really felt it about 6 years ago, when spring hit Belfast on the 25th February late in the evening. I remember this because it was my friend’s birthday and we were popping out to buy some drinks. I was completely overwhelmed by the atmosphere. Change was in the air like a quiet storm. I stopped to touch the tree at the side of the road because I was sure the plants all around were waking from their slumber; the life-force of vital saps welling up inside them. Everything was still and expectant. Sure enough, the next morning the sun blazed through fresh clear air while buds adorned branches and poked from the ground.

I don’t deny the weather conditions favourable to such an event and the pheromones of plant activity are what I sensed, rather than some esoteric “energy”, but the point is that we can sense it if we take the time to notice. In all actuality, now that I have had the chance to consider, these conditions were apparent on Sunday evening: I could have declared “New Year” then, or even yesterday, but I was caught up with hectic activity and let it slip by. As I tweeted earlier today, I was removed from the experience until now; but now it is!

I would encourage everyone to recognise their own “New Year” when it happens for them, and to roll onward with the positive surge that nature provides. Let’s get to it!

Set the controls to the heart of the sun.

Intentions can easily fall by the wayside; but not so easily if they are SMART (specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, time-bound): you may observe these elements below, but have probably all been preached the acronym enough to avoid further explanation.  I call them intentions, rather than ‘resolutions’, as they match my needs and desires at the time – both of which may well change throughout the year ahead.  The guilt of a broken resolve is negated; the mis-placed intention realigned, is only a good thing.

Last year I tracked my intentions, much as Benjamin Franklin tracked his virtues.  Most, by trickery of averaging were attained.  Some sufficed to have the desired effect, and many seeded activity that developed and changed direction.  Although I stopped tracking around October (and should perhaps have re-examined at that time), my year benefited from the exercise; even though I never once went swimming, let alone once per month…

This year, an even greater mix of short and long term goals; regular and one-off achievements; mundane habitude and grand scheming:

  • Write at least 1x /week (is that a new blog sir?)
  • Jot all quotes in the 1 book, and store all writings in the 1 file!
  • Memorise 1 quote /month.
  • Memorise 1 poem/passage /3 months.
  • Go to the Cinema 1x /month.
  • Read 3 Books /2 months (an increase from last year’s success)
  • Attend 1 gig/classical music/art/literary event /month.
  • Fast 1 day /week.
  • Continue with my new, intense 1-day /week gym training.
  • Remember to use my nectar points/cashback links when shopping online.
  • Go horse riding for a day.
  • Complete part 2 of my Wilderness Medical Training (before my window expires in July)!
  • Go on a 3-day bicycle tour.
  • Visit at least 2 of the mountain ranges in Ireland (south of the border).
  • Before the end of the year, begin to learn some Sword in Tai Chi.
  • Partake in the Mourne Mountain Marathon in Class B or Elite!
  • Learn French at least 1 hour /week (bonus: get Rosetta Stone)
  • Get 1 of my photographs on a canvas, up on a wall in my house.
  • Sell 3 of my photographs.
  • Take 2 steps towards preparations for future ambitions (Mongol Rally, Expedition to Afghan Hindu Kush)
  • Bonus – get away to Skye to play on the Cuillin.
  • Bonus – get away to the Alps for some winter mountaineering and tuition in same.

It looks like a lot, but is all rather SMART.  A rich year of effort and reward awaits!  If anyone can help with any of my intentions, I am open to offers.  What do you intend to do with yourself in 2010?
